Terminology for the Netflix Fanatic

by Ryan Sims 40 Comments

I don't know about you, but I am a Netflix fanatic. It combines three of my most favoritest things, this side of Middle Earth: movies and internet and laziness. But you already know this. You're a Netflixer, too. We love most of the same things, you and I, or you wouldn't be reading this right now. The more advanced of a NF user I become, the more frequently I start to notice a few trends that seem to happen over and over. And I need terms for them...

Notflixing - the act of Netflixing a movie which sits on your coffee table for at least a week (if not much, much longer) and you send it back without watching it. (coined by Bryan Bedell)

Flopflixing - the act of Netflixing a movie, watching 15 minutes of it, deciding you don't like it and thus, promptly return it.

Superfluoflixing - the act of physically renting a movie that is in your Netflix queue from a Blockbuster or Hollywood Video in an impromptu manner, watching and returning it, without removing said movie from your queue before Netflix ships it out.

Queuemongering - the act of compulsively adding movies to your Netflix queue without any intention of actually watching it; subsequently, said film hovers around the bottom of your queue, pushing the update queue button that much farther down the page.

Burnflixing - receive movie, open package, place dvd in Macbook superdrive, burn, remove dvd, place back in package, send back to Netflix. Repeat.

Got any other ones? Think mine could use some refining? Let's collaborate, shall we?

Netflux – the period between movies, for those of us on the 1 DVD at a time plan.

FastPreviewFlixing- Recieve move, start watching movie, becomes a bit boring, or not what you expected but you still want to know what happens in the end so you watch the movie in fast forward, occationally watching portions that look halfway intresting.

I must add that I am a movie renting fanatic, however with the new Blockbuster online, where you get movies by mail and in the store, for a cheaper price, why would you stick with NetFlix (especially with a Blockbuster less tahn a block away.)

How about:

Wetflixing:The art of spilling any sort of beverage, preferably dark and/or sticky (as in coca-cola), over the entirety of your rented envelope, thus being forced to jam two discs into one un-beverage-tainted envelope for returning.

OCD Flix-Itis: an obsession with cramming as many movies into your plan as possible, watching your movies as soon as you get them, and rushing to the mailbox, so you can turn them in and get more! This condition is also accompanied with chronic checking-of-the-queue.

Spoutflixing: So this is a plug for the site I work for and a legitimate new netflix term. It's using Spout.com's Moviemind app to suggest which movies you will like by looking at the movies you have rated on the site. It's pretty accurate and the more movies you rate the more accurate it gets. Spouts a pretty cool site for anyone who's into movies. Check it out…

Hahaha!!! Wow. Queuemongering and Burnflixing completely sum up my use of Netflix.

How about: Netfixing – trying to quickly rearrange your que in the few moments between when a movie is recognized as returned and the next one ships.

Infideliflixing – the act of simultaneously owning both blockbuster online and netflix accounts. Allegiance is not an issue with the Infideliflixer. Diversity is key.

It's quite simple, really. And people (actresses) are really starting to catch on. It's a new Hollywood and looking like a goddess just isn't good enough anymore – you've got to look bad to be good, aspiring actresses. Praesent molestie, nibh eget blandit consectetuer, mi enim sodales ante, id commodo sem risus a risus. Curabitur id magna. Class aptent taciti sociosqu ad litora torquent per conubia nostra, per inceptos hymenaeos. Praesent molestie, nibh eget blandit consectetuer, mi enim sodales ante.

Flixfixing: The act of wiping down a skipping or dirty Netflix disc with Windex to remove grease, fingerprints, food and who knows what else left by previous thoughtful viewers.

Q-queueing: Filling up your queue with gay movies.

Flixflipping: Picking up your Netflix at 11 AM, watching it, and returning it to the post office by 3:45 the same day.

Hickflixing: Filling every slot in your queue with DELIVERANCE.

Wickflixing: Watching Netflix by candlelight.

This is fun! Here's one:

VeryLongWaitFlixing – Where you fill the top of your queue with movies with Very Long Waits, in the hope that they ever become available.

Mike

Here are a couple:

Slickflixing: getting netflix to send you another movie from your queue even though you already have the max # of discs from your plan at home. Think about it…

Flixfingerdiscount: Liked your netflix movie so much that you don't want give it back so you claim it never arrived at your house in the first place.

I thought of another one last night: bi-queue-mongering – being so addicted to adding to your queue that you fill it up to the 500 level and then open a new profile under an alias so you can start filling that one up too.

"TripFlixing" The act of dragging all of your DVD's with you on vacation.

"VacaFluxing" The act of changing your delivery address to your vacation destination, even if it's only for a couple of weeks.

That's just too cute! I find myself relating to quite a few of these ;)

Netflixnesia—- forgetting where you put the little red envelopes and panicking because you want the next things on your queue and you want them NOW! ::runs around living room overturning furniture::

Laziflixing—- realizing that you paid your subscription fees for an entire month and only got 1 new rental. See above term.

How about cruciflixtion: filling up your queue with movies that your netflix-less friends want to see, thus martyring yourself by not being able to watch the movies you want to see.

bluebuddhalou

28 Jan 08 at 11:21pm

FlixBuddy: A friend, with similar cinematic tastes but low funds, to whom you systematically loan your already-viewed Netflix DVDs with the understanding that the disks will be promptly mailed in as soon as they've been watched. Rinse, repeat. You upgrade your subscription in order to keep 'em coming!

Streetraker

bitterflixitis – having the feeling that an injustice has been served upon you when the new release you've saved in your queue since before the theatrical release date is now available, but with a "very long wait". Often accompanied with a severe resentment toward whomever has the movie, knowing they didn't save it as long as you did.

entropic rating aka rater's remorse– 1. docking stars from previously rated movies, thinking, "That wasn't that good." 2. Going back over your movie ratings and giving out stars haphazzardly, thinking, "I was too harsh. 3. Changing your ratings to spite other raters.

30 Jan 08 at 11:03pm

whattheflix – receiving a movie you know wasn't next on your queue and feeling cheated because you weren't emotionally ready to watch it.

The Deadflix Zone — when you don't mail the DVD in time for the last Thursday pick-up, and have to wait until Tuesday to get a new one.

The DoubleDeadflix Zone — when you don't mail it in time for the last Saturday pick-up, and have to wait till Wednesday for your new flix.

Unthrottling – deliberately going a week or two without returning any movies. Done in advance when you want to watch a multi-disc series without one of the discs suddenly turning to Very Long Wait because Netflix is throttling you for overuse.

NetFlixtion – Something about your Netflix account that causes you stress or anxiety.

Monoqueue – A single queue shared and managed by multiple people. SneakFlixing can be common.

Polyqueue – Multiple profile queues for a single household. Often brought on by IrreconcilableQueues.

IrreconcilableQueues – A term referring to a monoqueue that has become a point of tension within a household. It is common to see the over use of SneakFlixing by everyone managing a queue suffering from IrreconcilableQueues.

Queue Non Grata – A queue containing movies no one but the queue owner wishes to see. This netflixtion is common amongst households that practice Polyqueueing.

SneakFlixing – The act of secretly modifying a queue in an attempt to receive a movie you would like to watch. Can become an addiction if you suffer from IrreconcilableQueue or Queue Non Grata.

SpouseFlixing – Is a sub class of SneakFlixing.

Flixtator – The "Owner" that revokes the use of or controls the queues in a polyqueueing household. Often caused by Queue Non Grata in the eyes of the the account Owner.

FastPreviewFlixing Point – Usage: FPF 15. A way to rank a movie based on the point in a movie where it becomes unbearable and one must begin to FastPreviewFlix. This can be a good comparison amongst friends as to how bad a movie was or how strong willed the movie watcher was. Thank you Shane Guymon for inspiring this ranking scheme.

CovertQueueing – The act of sabotaging someones queue with a movie you know they will dislike. A fun prank to play between friends, not so fun if you have to watch the movie also. Movies with high FPF Point are good candidates for CovertQueueing. The longer you can waste the time of a friends by having them watch a bad movie the greater the joy.

If you have never CovertQueued and you think you might want to give it a try I'd recommend the movie "Gerry". This is a great movie for CovertQueueing the casual movie watcher because on the surface it appears main stream but for the majority of viewers is turns into a FastPreviewFlixing experience.

What about SETflixing? When you hold onto, say, the first 2 discs of a 3 dvd set movie because the 3rd disc is next in your queue.

Redfixing: using tape to repair the Red Envelope when you tore off the sticky part, opening it from the wrong side.

InvisiFlixing: hiding the Red Envelope from view as you put it in your mailbox, in fear that your neighbors will see it, recognize it as a movie, and steal it from your box before the mailman picks it up.

ChickFlixed: The state of eagerly anticipating the evening's movie, only to find out that the one that came was the one your wife put on the queue.

Lackaflixadaisical: The state of lethargy that ensues when you realize you have no Netflix that night; the emotional response to DKD's "The Deadflix Zone." (not to be confused with "lackaflixaphobia", as previously submitted by Becky)

Premature Netflixation: Sealing the red envelope after watching a movie then immediately remembering you wanted to listen to the director's commentary or rewatch a part of the movie again.

Q on the DL: Deliberately not telling your friends what you're watching for fear they'll want to borrow the disks, thus delaying the arrival of your next movie.

Netpestering: Allowing friends to borrow your movies then obsessively reminding them to get them in the mail ASAP.

Anti-Q-max: The letdown you feel when a disk arrives cracked or unplayable.

Mia

24 Apr 08 at 4:00pm

Posi-flexing – Rating only movies you like out of fear that a single negative review on something might prevent a good movie from being recommended.

Packet-Flex – When people save up stacks of return packets by returning all rented movies stuffed into one packet.

Postal-flexing – Anything that can be done to speed up the return and ship cycle. Myself, my roomie is a mailman so when he leaves for work in the early AM, he's got the movies going back, giving them a head start over the mailbox.

Homo-flexed – You rented one gay themed movie your girlfriend wanted to watch and now Netflix thinks I'm gay when it comes to recommendations.
