Goodnight, New York

The City that never sleeps has been given a bedtime. Why is it that with every passing year, it seems we live in less and less of a Democracy. We are told what food and cooking oils we cannot consume, but we just can't seem to get out of Iraq. I'm so confused. Maybe you can help me out...

That sucks, part of the attraction in going out to NY was how late places stay open, versus the 2am closing time of NJ bar/pubs.

As a culture we have a limited attention span. We're busy worrying about (insert latest CNN headline here) and missing all the little ways minority voices push to get their way and encroach on freedoms…

Hmm, general closing time over here in NZ seems to be 7pm. Bars can be open as late as 10 or 11 though! woo! Okay, so the inner-city ones do go later, but I miss nightlife

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to make this a drinking or bar related post. It simply seems that more and more we are TOLD what is best for us, rather than being allowed to make our own decisions.

This is a great topic. By nature do we do what's better when told or allowed? Looking at the health problems most parents have passed onto their children it's obviously a significant issue. But years ago I had a teen-age boy in Eastern Europe tell me that communism was better for the public because they didn't know what was best for them. Scary.

The government and media like to run our lives with fear. It really sucks.

Definitely not great news about the 2am-only licenses, but I will say that there are ways around it for those that are creative. There are only a select few places that stay open until 4 here in NC…mostly because of a 2am alcohol law. We just have to buy multiple drinks in advance around 1:45. Not perfect, but you can still drink it as long as you bought it before 2.

perhaps enough of us decided we're too busy and/or lazy to care, we'll let the government take care of it. and so they did.. and now we're bitching about it. somehow that little ditty about "government of the people, by the people, for the people," has escaped some of our memories. but don't worry, this week the primetime network engine roars back to life which ought to distract us long enough for the executive branch to make a few dozen more bad decisions in our name. and when we finally take notice and begin to whine, they'll jingle their keys in front of our faces until we're fat, dumb, and happy again.

Our government is corrupt and we have an asshole for a president. That pretty much sums it up.
